North Petherton in Kelly’s Directory of Somerset, 1914
A structured extraction of people, places, businesses, churches, schools, organisations and public services
Source set: Kelly’s Directory of the County of Somerset, 1914, Parts 1-9
Scope and method. This document brings together all North Petherton information identified in the supplied 1914 Kelly’s Directory files. The main North Petherton gazetteer and directory entry is on printed pages 381-382. Supplementary cross-references were drawn from the county preliminary tables, the Bridgwater section, neighbouring parish entries and the trades directory. Abbreviations such as ‘frmr.’ and ‘mrkt. gdnr.’ have been expanded for readability; historical spellings and names have otherwise been retained. Where the directory did not give a full address, the address column says ‘Not stated’.
Key findings
North Petherton was presented as a large rural parish and village on the main Bridgwater to Taunton road, with the River Parret and Taunton and Bridgwater Canal passing through the parish.
The 1911 population was 3,338 for the civil parish and 1,985 for the ecclesiastical parish.
The local economy was strongly agricultural, with numerous farmers, market gardeners, pig dealers and dairying activity, alongside cider/brewing, basket and wicker work, building trades, saddlery, smithing, shops, public houses and carriers.
Important institutions included St Mary’s Church, a Congregational chapel, a cemetery controlled by the Parish Council, a Public Elementary School, a police station, a post/telegraph/telephone office, and the North Petherton Athletic Association.
Huntworth is treated as a hamlet of North Petherton and is listed separately in the directory.

Trades index references used from Parts 7-9 where they confirmed or clarified businesses and trades listed in the North Petherton commercial section.
The word ‘Caesar’ is used in the tables for typing consistency; the original entry prints the name as ‘Cæsar’ / ‘Cresar’ depending on OCR interpretation. The page image supports the historical name form Cæsar Frederick Hawkins.
The printed page image and trade-list occurrence support reading the farmer at Bankland as Jeanes John. The OCR output rendered this as ‘JPanes John’.
